What is breathable leather?
As technology continues to evolve with “leather-look” covers, fabric mills are coming up with stronger and more durable urethanes – better solutions than the bonded leathers or polished microfibers of the last few years. These urethanes are embossed to look like leather, and then “micro-stamped” with holes so they can breathe. This, along with a thick fleece backing, gives “breatheables” a soft, squishy feel that is as close to leather as anything ever produced. Plus, all of the urethanes that we use must pass what is known as a “5-year hydrolytic test.” Basically, this involves placing the urethane cover in a sealed container and heating it to 190 degrees at 85% humidity. After (35) days – (7 days equals 1 year, so 35 days in the container equals what would be the equivalent of 5 years), the cover is removed and tested for flaking, bubbling, chipping, peeling, cracking and color-steadfastness. All the new breathable urethanes we use at corinthian, including jamestown, salinger, and florence pass this test with flying colors.
